Bill X-18 (NSFW Filter Proposition)

Posted by Anonymous-Frog - January 29th, 2023

UPDATE: Accidentally posted twice.

WARNING: Some links may be NSFW. Click with caution and turn the A filter off if necessary.

The 10 second short What happens if you Reject Nemona? wins Daily 1st. Despite showing the author's skills very well, plenty of users still get upset, mainly as it was essentially softcore porn (as in, the main focus are boobs, but they aren't really exposed). | Relevant thread

Same deal with How people reacted to Grusha?, posted two days later from the same author and expected to have a similar fate. (update: it got Daily 2nd)

So, how do we prevent this sort of shit happening again in the futa? I mean future!

My solution:

An X rating, separate from the regular ratings that can be toggled on and off, as seen in this mockup

iu_881939_8157415.png

Under this "X" rating, submissions can't win awards and can only be viewed when the A filter is turned on, regardless of whether it's rated A, M, T, etc, and it'll be marked as E-x, T-x, M-x, or A-x.

Here are some use cases. Most submissions documented in my A-Rated Movie Statistics should fall under the regular A rating, while most content submitted nowadays that typically get A ratings should get the A-x rating.

With this new rating, here's what I expect would happen:

1) Fetish content, even if not directly deserving of the A rating, will still only be shown to 18+ users.

2) Erotic movies (that are rated M) are less likely to win awards and warrant "P-bot horny" comments.

3) Authors mainly known for adult content (eg. Diives) who post SFW content that are rated E-x or T-x, should reduce the chances of under 18s stumbling upon their more graphic content.

Even if authors still submit 10 second booby loops under the standard M rating, users can flag it as "improper" to mark it as M-x.

Please let me know if you like or dislike this proposed feature and your reasons why.

Could be useful, though it can somewhat affect creators who do both sfw and NSFW materials. For example, Diives draw amazing art and animations dedicated to his country culture. Would be a waste if someone misses them just because of A-rating turned off. So I don't like the idea of NSFW artists having x rating on everything they post. Overall, maybe it's more simple to just expand A-rating criteria?

Diives has more followers than ninjamuffin99. I would prefer that Newgrounds would keep its focus on SFW content and creators.

for the number of times, this kind of thing happens, this is an unnecessary complication to the rating system and its implication would bring more counterproductive paperwork or leg work to deal with appropriately.
these people are crybabies and or may be poking fun at the Terms Of Use that newgrounds has

You affirm that you are over the age of 13, as the Newgrounds Website is not intended for children under 13. If you are under 13 years of age, then please leave Newgrounds immediately - there are lots of other, more pleasant web sites out there that won't horrify your delicate parents. Talk to your parents about what sites those might be.

let this one go bud

You're missing the point. This is a problem because even if a user is between 13 and 18, they are still able to watch what is essentially softcore porn, which they shouldn't even be watching at that age.

Plus, do keep in mind the existing Movie Guideline, which I don't think gets enforced enough.
"If your animation is fetish content, please just mark at as adult; people get unhappy when fetish content appears in the non-adult listings."

There's a reason why blog posts and the Collabinator got content ratings last year. It's to stop minors from accessing dirty shit when their parents won't stop them themselves

@Anonymous-Frog pretty sure that if the kid wants to view the stuff, newgrounds is not the hideout that they are going to visit.
I don't encourage individuals from watching content that shouldn't be rated for them, but let's take a count of the problem that you are trying to face
A. the 15 year old clicks on the A for adult filter and gets bombed with nudity and they can go on a shopping spree with their eyeballs
B. the 15 year old clicks on the Ax filter and gets bombed with nudity and they can go on a shopping spree with their eyeballs

how does this rating system prevent either of these situations in the more extreme version of this example?

X-18 isn't really designed to stop 15 year old from watching existing A-rated content, as there's already a good restriction feature where if you aren't signed in, it'll block you out and require you to be logged in and be over 18.
https://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1511759/1
It's enough to deter most kids, but in the extreme case where said kid lies about their age and creates an account to view porn, then they may get caught out if they are careless with their reviews and/or posts.

In this example, both the A and the Ax rated movies will be restricted, however you will also be restricted from Mx-rated content and anything else with the X rating.

@Anonymous-Frog you aren't really selling me on the X rating system at this point bud, I know the challenge that a system would create, and it's just as easily exploitable as the current system

I remember how I would get this response from my manager when I would try to bring up improvements to one of my old jobs.

we will see if there is room in the budget next quarter for this opportunity

This is the most stupidest idea ever.
It's basically just "Look, let's punish NSFW artists by making a system that they cannot win awards what-so-ever!"
I don't see why we need to dumb down the system just because some slap-shot idiot doesn't know how to filter out content based on ratings. Sure, boobs = wins daily awards sucks, but it shouldn't actively punish artists that would want to draw boobs. In fact, how would it be fair to ban NSFW creators from getting awards at all? Why can't we just make submissions that has some nudity weigh way less than submissions that do not have nudity (Because ALL Rated A submissions require the Lots of Nudity rating.)? Why do we need an extra rating that is an automatic checks "Opt out of any awards" for non-rated A submissions? And no, "under 18s" aren't going to stumble upon the more graphic content, which assuming by the description, it would be referring to Rated A submissions, because Newgrounds does it FOR YOU. I don't see why in the vivid hell should the X-rating exist if fetish submissions are automatically signed with either an Rated M (Mainly likely for the other portals, as they explicitly do not have this guideline.) or A (Only in the Movie guidelines.). It's like as if the Block User function, which allows you to block their content as well, doesn't exist. Don't like this NSFW artist? Block 'em. I don't see why we should allow a redundant system like this that actively favors SFW artists more and not level out the playing field so that "P-Bot horny" appears LESS.

Thank you for your feedback. Despite most of all the most viewed submissions being A-rated (sort by views and turn the filter on to see what I mean), we would still prefer to keep the focus on SFW content, so they deserve to be punished whenever they steal one of our trophies.

I am not sure if this is a good idea. I kinda support it because I like BlueTheBone’s SFW art. But I dont like it as much because its kinda punishing.

Plus if the hypothetical Diives really cared, he would take the same route as Derpixon and create an alt account.
